"Booray".
While carded
cotton is the standard material for wrapping hurdy-gurdy strings, there
is a place for a stronger, longer lasting alternative.
I have
developed " Booray" after much trial and error and it has proved to be
very popular with those players who have tried it. It consists of a
50/50 blend of bamboo and rayon fibres.
The extra
strength means it lasts many times as long as cotton and the
microscopic porosity of the bamboo fibre component seems to grip the
wheel better resulting in greater volume and less wheel pressure when
used on wound strings.
Results on
plain gut chanters are variable so this is not a total replacement for
cotton but I believe it is a useful addition to the player's
maintenance kit. Each ball is individually carded by hand to ensure an
even blend.
